The ’90s gave us iconic fashion, unforgettable music, and some of the most enduring Black love stories in Hollywood. If you were lucky enough to grow up during this era, you witnessed yearning, Love Jones-inspired romance and plenty of early #couplesgoals.

The ’90s gave us iconic fashion, unforgettable music, and some of the most enduring Black love stories in Hollywood. If you were lucky enough to grow up during this era, you witnessed yearning, Love Jones-inspired romance and plenty of early #couplesgoals. We saw some of the most beautiful Black celebs fall in love. That meant the world to young Black kids who needed a prototype of what partnership and love could look like in our community. Although we shouldn’t idolize celebrity relationships, they can be a source of inspiration. Especially the couples who’ve weathered decades of fame, tribulations, and evolution.
Decades later, these Black couples are still choosing each other and offering a blueprint for partnership, even when it takes an untraditional approach. Take a nostalgic walk down memory lane as we look at some of our favorite ’90s couples. They remind us that true love can stand the test of time.
Angela Bassett and Courtney B. Vance

These acclaimed actors have been together for decades and we’re all proud of the life they’ve built. Bassett and Vance first crossed paths as drama students at Yale, but their romance didn’t spark until years later. They married in 1997 and have been a model of dedication, family, and Black love ever since. Through careers filled with critically acclaimed roles, they’ve stuck together and raised two beautiful children, twins Bronwyn Golden Vance and Slater Josiah Vance, who will carry on their legacy.
LL Cool J and Simone Smith

A ’90s love story that is still being written is that of LL Cool J and Simone Smith. They met as teenagers and married in 1995. Because every relationship has its fair share of challenges, their bond was tested when Simone was diagnosed with bone cancer in 2004. As a stand-up guy, LL stood by her side throughout her recovery. Now, nearly three decades into marriage, they continue to prioritize faith, family, and resilience.
Morris Chestnut and Pam Byse

Morris Chestnut is easily one of the most beautiful Black men then and now. He was easily a poster on many of our walls. However, the ’90s cutie has always been clear that he’s off the market as he’s been married to his longtime wife Pam Byse since 1995. The pair met in the early ’90s at a club long before he became a leading man in Hollywood. Chestnut and Byse eventually married in 1995 and have maintained one of the most private and stable marriages in the industry. With nearly 30 years together, they’ve kept their relationship grounded. Maybe staying out of the spotlight has been their secret sauce.
Holly Robinson Peete and Rodney Peete

Actress Holly Robinson Peete and Rodney Peete married in June 1995 after meeting through mutual friends. The actress and former NFL quarterback have built a life centered around advocacy, especially for autism awareness after their son’s diagnosis. Their partnership reflects teamwork in marriage, parenting, and purpose.
Debbie Allen and Norman Nixon

Former NBA player Norman Nixon and actress/choreographer Debbie Allen married in 1984, but their love story carried strong into the ’90s and beyond. As a power couple balancing sports, entertainment, and family, they’ve built a life that is comprised of successful children and a shared commitment to the arts. They’re aging beautifully and we’re lucky to have witnessed their love for so many years.
Samuel and LaTanya Richardson Jackson

These love birds met in college during the civil rights movement and married in 1980, well before Jackson became a household name in the ’90s. Us ’90s babies have appreciated the love they’ve modeled The Jackson’s marriage has spanned more than four decades, with LaTanya supporting the actor through his rise to fame and his journey to sobriety. Together, they’ve built a love that has withstood many storms.
Denzel and Pauletta Washington

On the set of the movie Wilma in 1977, Denzel and Pauletta sparked a connection that would be lifelong. After a few proposals, Pauletta finally said yes, and meant it. The couple married in 1983, and by the ’90s, as Denzel’s career soared, their marriage remained in tact. With over 40 years together, they’ve emphasized faith, privacy, and family as the cornerstones of their marriage.
Snoop Dogg and Shante Broadus

Rapper Snoop Dogg married his high school sweetheart, Shante Broadus, in 1997. They were locked in throughout the 90s, shaping our ideas about what a fly Black family could look like. Though they briefly separated in the early 2000s, the couple renewed their vows in 2008 and have remained solid ever since. Their decades-long relationship has evolved alongside Snoop’s career, with Shante playing a key role in both his personal and professional life. On Shante’s 50th birthday in November 2025, the artist showered Shante with three rings, each one symbolizing a chapter in their love story.
Magic and Cookie Johnson

Earvin “Magic” Johnson met Cookie in college in the late ’70s, but their relationship blossomed into a lifelong commitment when they got hitched in 1991. Their love was tested early when Magic publicly announced his HIV diagnosis the same year. Cookie stood firmly by his side in spite of that hurdle and they’ve become advocates for HIV awareness while maintaining a strong marriage for over 30 years. These days, we look forward to their annual couples’ yacht trip, which happens around July and features a range of other famous Black lovers (a few on this list!).
Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith

Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s love story began in 1994 when she auditioned for The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Though the actress didn’t land the role, she did capture WIll’s attention, and eventually, his heart. The couple married in 1997 and have spent nearly three decades redefining what partnership looks like. While their relationship is controversial these days, they have remained a staple partnership.
