Here’s How Ashanti Lation Perfected Latto’s BET Awards 2026 Bun

Just over one month after giving birth to her first child with her partner, 21 Savage, Latto is headed to New Orleans to perform at this year’s Essence Festival. But first, the busy rapper arrived at the BET Awards to perfect a classic style: the bun.

“The inspiration was modern elegance with quiet confidence,” her hairstylist Ashanti Lation tells ESSENCE exclusively. “It’s a look that proves simplicity can be just as powerful as drama.” Paired with a sheer black corseted dress and feather stole, her hair delivered a more drawn back simplicity to her eye-wandering ensemble.

“Her gown already made a bold statement,” Lation says. “I wanted the hair to bring balance through clean lines, immaculate shine, and timeless sophistication.” However, before Lation even approached Latto’s hair, she balanced her scalp. Pre-styling with tgin’s Balance Collection, she went in with the Scalp Serum and Scalp Exfoliator for a fresh foundation before shampoo and conditioner.

“A hydrated foundation is essential for achieving a sleek finish without compromising the health of the hair,” she says. Next, she blow dried her hair completely dry before adding in the Miracle Styling Curl Gel for a sleek, polished foundation.

From there, she smoothed each section in place before securing the bun and using a wax stick to refine her hairline and flyaways for a clean, sculpted finish. As for the shiny finish, “I applied a few drops of tgin Miracle Styling Ayurvedic Hair & Scalp Oil to add luminous shine and keep the hair looking healthy under the lights,” she says, along with one last spritz of heat protectant spray.

Coupled with baby pink makeup and French tips, “the sleek, sculpted bun feels effortless but intentional, allowing every detail, from the silhouette to the jewelry, to shine,” Lation says about the final look. And, that’s how you mother the perfect bun.
