NATIONWIDE — Dr. Regina Davis Moss, President and CEO of In Our Own Voice: National Black Women’s Reproductive Justice Agenda, released the following statement marking the fourth anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which overturned Roe v. Wade and eliminated the federal right to abortion.

“As we mark another year since the Dobbs decision overturned Roe v. Wade, we must reiterate what advocates have shared time and time again: Roe was never enough. Legal protections alone cannot overcome barriers rooted in racism, economic inequality, geography, and political attacks that left abortion care and other reproductive health services out of reach for far too many.

In the last four years, we have seen the devastating consequences of the Dobbs decision across the country. The current patchwork of abortion bans and restrictions is creating life-threatening barriers, sowing confusion and fear around an essential health service, and ultimately costing people their lives. The consequences extend far beyond abortion care. These barriers are threatening maternal health, undermining patient-provider relationships, and deepening longstanding inequities throughout our healthcare system.

For Black women, girls, gender-expansive people, and communities already pushed to the margins of our healthcare system, the stakes could not be higher. Black women and Reproductive Justice advocates have long warned that attacks on abortion access would never stop at abortion alone. The same systems that restrict our ability to access abortion care also threaten our maternal health, economic security, and ability to make decisions about our bodies, families, and futures.

Reproductive Justice demands more than restoring what existed before Dobbs. At In Our Own Voice, we will continue to fight for policies that protect bodily autonomy, expand access to abortion and reproductive healthcare, and ensure that every person has the resources and support they need to make decisions about their lives, families, and futures with dignity, safety, and self-determination.”
