Supreme Court Grants Stay: Mifepristone Access Unchanged, For Now
Today, the Supreme Court of the United States continues to pause Louisiana’s attempt to eliminate mifepristone via mail and for pick up at pharmacy while the litigation continues. Dr. Jamila Perritt, ob/gyn in Washington DC and President & CEO of Physicians for Reproductive Health responds:
“Today’s stay from the Supreme Court means that patients can continue to get the most frequently used method for medication for abortion care whether seeking care in clinic, via telehealth, or at home.
“Mifepristone is a well-studied, safe, life-saving medication for abortion care and pregnancy care. These attempts to restrict access to mifepristone aren’t about the medication’s safety or effectiveness. Instead, we know it is about control of people’s bodies, families, and futures.
“Unfortunately, we know this won’t be the last attempt to attack abortion and strip people of their basic bodily autonomy. This administrative stay is not the clarity and solution that patients deserve. As courts usurp medical authority and disrupt evidence-based care, patients and clinicians are left scrambling to shift protocols and wondering how to ensure that care is still accessible. The fear and confusion that result from these harmful maneuvers are the entire point. We all deserve the ability to obtain safe and effective care in our communities, regardless of the political ideologies of judges and politicians.
“At Physicians for Reproductive Health, we won’t sit idly by while politicians are trying to control people’s bodies and disrupt the care people need. We are committed to a future where everyone can get the sexual and reproductive health care they need no matter who they are or where they live. We urge the Supreme Court to acknowledge the undisputed, reputable, longstanding research that shows mifepristone is safe, effective, and lifesaving.”
