The Best Style Moments From The 2026 Essence Black Women In Music Awards

On Sunday, T.I., and his live orchestra, wasn’t the only closing act of Essence Festival 2026. Earlier that day, Essence hosted our first Black Women in Music Awards in eight years, honoring the artists who’ve made historic contributions in the industry.

For one, Essence Festival performer Monica was honored with the Luminary Award just one day after she performed with Brandy. To accept the award, she wore a classic hairstyle similar to one she performed in the night before. This time with a wavy texture paired with a checkered manicure. As for Brandy, honored with the Legend Award, her silver braids were replaced with voluminous honey curls topped with a red hat to match her sculpted gown.

Icon Award winner Missy Elliott, who curated Essence Festival’s Aaliyah tribute, landed on a style longer and wavier than Brandy’s, yet curlier and lighter than Monica’s. In other words, dark brown, brushed curls. Her look was completed with dramatic eyeshadow, which was a similar tone to her mismatched manicure. After Kandi Burruss’ masterclass on career pivoting, the Trailblazer Award winner arrived in a sleek updo and a neutral manicure with her wardrobe dressed up in a layer of brown leather belts. Meanwhile, Mona Scott-Young, honored with the Visionary Award, accepted her award in a long bronze bob.

Ahead, take a look at all the best beauty and style moments from Essence Black Women in Music 2026.
